Triple Threat Alexei Knocks 'Em Dead In Nagano
Alexei has won his fourth World Championship, and completed a treble of European, Olympic and Worlds gold.

Timothy Goebel turned in some perfect jumps, but lost marks on presentation, leaving him in second place. Japan's Takeshi Honda took the bronze, whilst a dejected Alexander Abt came in fourth.
As in Tuesday's programme, Alexei delighted the largely female crowd, who flocked down to the front of the arena seats to throw toys and flowers. It took volunteers over five minutes to clear the rink of flowers for the final three skaters

Alexei finely executed a quad-triple-double toe cascade, one single quad and five triples to achieve excellent technical marks.

But the crowd at Nagano was given another fright, as Alexei's wobbly triple lutz came back to haunt him. This time it was a triple flip, and a near touch down which provided the drama, but it wasn't enough to seriously affect his marks.

Alexei skated an identical programme to the Olympics, only adding some extra moves to his electric step sequence. The music was from the soundtrack of the 1998 version of The Man In The Iron Mask.

A notable absence from the competition was Evgeni Plushenko, who took Alexei's World Championship title in 2001. He sited a knee injury, spoiling skating fans' hope of a dramatic showdown between the long time rivals.

This will probably be Alexei's final amateur competition; he was the only Olympic champion to compete. He has since revealed that he may use hip hop rather than the traditional classical music in his future programmes.
Alexei's classified marks for the free programme were as follows:

Required Elements
5.8 5.8 5.8 5.8 5.9 5.8 5.8 5.9 5.9

Alexei's near touch down on his triple flip did not allow for any perfect marks, though it was comparable to his near fall in the short programme, where the Ukraini judge awarded a 6.0 for presentation. Alexei's nearest rival, American Timothy Goebel had incomparable technical marks, and lost more ground on the presentation.

Presentation
5.9 5.9 5.9 5.9 6.0 5.9 5.9 5.9 6.0

Despite skating fourth to last, the judge's left little room for improvement on Alexei's presentation marks. Sixes came from Germany and Azherbaijan.
